Microsoft And Nokia To Give Away 85,000 FREE Lumia Smartphones
Recently, Nokia turned heads towards itself with the unveiling of it’s new Lumia line of smartphones, the flagship Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710. The phones use the Microsoft Windows Phone Mango platform.
Now Nokia and Microsoft are again in the limelight with a new announcement: they will give away 85,000 new Lumia smartphones for free!
Both companies seem to have grand-marketing schemes ready for execution in order to give the Lumia phones a boost against the already present iPhone and Galaxy heavyweights and capture their market share.
According to Mary Jo-Foley at the All About Microsoft blog, both companies announced at the Nokia World conference in London to give away 25,000 Lumia phones to developers committed to theĀ Windows Phone platform. Both companies intend to help each other climb the smartphone ladder. Microsoft will use Nokia’s relations with network operators, it’s know-how of European markets and it’s merchandising techniques to gain a greater customer base while Nokia will use Microsoft’s developer tools, it’s cloud infrastructure and operating system to open a window into developer communities.
So, what about the remaining 60,000?
According to Business Week, they will be given to bloggers and cultural influencers. This is a big marketing scheme, in fact, the biggest Nokia has ever done!
Both companies have also announced to hold a thousand events worldwide to attract developers towards the Windows Phone platform.
With such serious dedication on the part of these giants towards the Lumia-Windows Phone combo, grouped with the awesomeness of both Windows Phone Mango and the Lumia smartphones, we can expect some upheaval in the smartphone market. Even if they don’t beat Android phones or the iPhone, they will very likely capture a fair amount of market share. And Windows Phone 8 (codenamed Apollo) is yet to arrive.
Okay, enough writing. I can’t stop ogling at the Lumia 800, I’m in love again!
