Cleaning Up Hard Disk Space In Vista: Part I (The Part Normal People Can Easily Finish)
Hi! Today I am going to give away free (
) tips on freeing up disk space on Windows Vista!
What you need:
Mouse, Keyboard, Computer, Windows Vista, Internet and Administrator access.
Step 1
Crap Cleaner (nice people abbreviate it as CCleaner, but I’m not nice, so there!)
Download it at http://ccleaner.com/.
Run CCleaner, and it will start to remove crap you don’t need (as the name suggests). You will need admin permissions. When logged in as admin, press continue. Just click ‘Run Cleaner’, don’t do anything else, or it will make you sad. When it is done, close CCleaner.
Step 2
Run Disk Defragmenter. You will find it by searching your programs folder, and you should have it unless you’re on an enterprise computer and your company removed it somehow, or if the tooth fairy came and took it because she thought it was a tooth. You will also need administrative permissions again. When you run it, click the “Defragment Now…” button, and then click the “OK” button in the next window. Technically this doesn’t make you lose space you don’t need, but it is good for your hard drive, so do it anyway.
Step 3
Run Disk Cleanup. You will find it by searching your program folder. Next, tell it to clean files from all users of the computer. It will once again ask for access, so give it access. Then tell it to clean up drive C. Now you have to wait for the little green bar to reach the end (it will eventually finish) , and then browse to the “More Options” tab then click the button the arrow is pointing to below:

Once you click there, click cancel. It may take a while to close.
Step 4
Remove Programs you are not using anymore.
This is the end of this tutorial. You probably have gotten back gigabytes of space for your own personal enjoyment and abuse. Remember to perform these steps frequently!
If you are willing to dive deep into your system files to clean up some space, look for my followup article, Cleaning up hard disk space in Vista: Part Two (the deep-cleaning part that normal people may not be capable of) (this article may never come out, you’ll just have to look and see! Bwahahaha!) See you then!
