Android Acitvations Reach 190 Million Worldwide, 576,900 Per Day!
Google has announced today that it has acknowledged 190 million Android activations worldwide, during it’s quarterly earnings call.
In May, Google announced that there had been a 100 million Android activations worldwide and around 500,000 activations per day, over 36 OEMs and 215 carriers. Since then, the number has reached 190 million activations and brings the current daily activation count to 576,900. Google has reported earnings of nearly $10 billion, one billion more than the estimated value.
The Android OS platform is gaining popularity at an extremely fast rate, a great sign for Google according to which it’s earnings from ads shown on these devices are expected to skyrocket.
Google CEO Larry Page, regarding the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, had this to say:
“We’re serious about protecting the Android eco-system!”
Well, that really doesn’t come as a surprise, considering the jolly good joy ride Google is having on Android’s back. The acquisition of Motorola Mobility is bound to reduce Google’s dependency on other mobile manufacturers for it’s devices and fortify Android’s foundations even more.
Android users have downloaded around 3 billion applications from the Android Market, having a total of 200,000 apps. The first billion was downloaded in 20 months, the next in 5 and the last billion took just 2 months to complete. This is still lower than the iPhone App Store, with more than 350,000 apps and 10 billion downloads, but considering the rate at which Android has gained momentum, it’s conquest in this area as well can not be that far off.
Even as the activations for Android are leaving those for the iOS behind by a great margin, analysts term this as a trend of surging growth in the smartphone market and believe that it will benefit Apple also, due to increasing public interest in the vast line up of new devices.
