Microsoft Laptop Hunters Mac Attack: This Time…It’s Sheila!

Microsoft is continuing on their journey to attempt to bash Apple to pieces with their fairly recent advertising campaign. During the ad, “Sheila” waltzes into a Fry’s Electronics (with blurred faces galore) and walks over to the computer section . She says she needs a laptop that has a large screen (every laptop hunter says that. coincidence?), that needs to be able to cut video. Apparently, she is a videographer. No wonder she isn’t famous yet, if the only thing she does to her videos is cut it.




She needs the computer for under 2000 USD. Apparently by coincidence (I hope) it is the same Fry’s I always go to. But besides that, she spends some time at the PCs, then goes to the Macs. She says “for under two grand this is the best Apple, and it only has 2 gigs of RAM”. She seriously said that. To tell you the truth, since Vista is a clunky operating system, 2 GB of memory on a Mac or Linux (I am a big Linux fan, not a fan of proprietary software. But since it seems that Linux is outta the picture in these ads, you get the idea) is about the same as 3 GB on Vista. Most Vista operating systems run a 32-bit operating system (the computer she bought is probably 32-bit since stores usually sell base configs, and the base config is a the 32-bit operating system. Of course, Microsoft has given us no clue on the specs of the machine), so her operating system can only address about 3.2 GB of DDR2 memory. If she got the Macbook Pro, she could (install) 4 GB of DDR3 memory. That would be useful if eventually she decided to do more things with her video instead of just cut it. In addition, the base config CPU in the Macbook Pro is more powerful then the base config CPU in the HP machine she bought. CPU power is needed for encoding video. In addition, the Macbook Pro comes with the iLife suite so she can go on and cut her video. And what about the Firewire port???!

In the end, she shouts Awesome! And says, I’m a PC and an artist.

In all these Microsoft ‘Laptop Hunters’ adverts, its always night time when they leave the Best Buy, Frys, etc with their laptops. Yet when they enter the stores its like mid-afternoon and broad daylight. Perhaps it represents a person now entering the dark side of the force? That would be very Microsoft.
