UPDATED: Upgrading Internet Explorer 6 To Internet Explorer 8

I recently cleaned up my PC (read formatted) and made a clean re-install of everything after getting a new hard drive. After installing all the necessary softwares, I decided to give Internet Explorer 8 a try. My Windows XP came with IE 6.
I downloaded the installation package from Microsoft’s website and set it to run. After peforming all the initial tasks, it started to install Internet Explorer 8 but the soon after that the installation failed. The installer created a webpage shortcut on my desktop upon failure.
When I clicked on that shortcut, it directed me to the IE 8 troubleshooting page. I tried numerous things there, including installing some Windows patches but it still didn’t work. I tried searching the net for some way but there wasn’t one. At least I couldn’t find one.
Last night, I decided to try a different approach. I first upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. Then I ran the installer package for Internet Explorer 8. And it worked. The genius that I am…

Get the installer for IE 7 here and if you are seriously lazy, IE 8 here. But I would recommend downloading the latest version of IE 8 from Microsoft directly.
UPDATE: Please make sure that your Windows has been completely updated before running each installer to reduce the chances of failure.
